It is -- and at a rate faster than anyone previously thought, according to a study by a group of geologists reported by Sandy Bauers in an interesting, hows-this-for-the-long-view
story in today's Inquirer (Dec. 29th). There are two powerful factors at work here, Bauers reports. One is the rise in sea level caused by the melting of ice caps and glaciers in Greenland and points north, But the other is that the land itself is sinking -- and New Jersey is sinking faster than anywhere else on the East Coast, according to the study. The rate in New Jersey is one inch every 10 years, which is light speed in the world of geology. This may be the century for savvy real estate investors to start snatching future beach front property in Vineland.
