Bob Warner
reports in the Daily News today (Jan. 18) that the state Republican Party leadership is trying to goose the Philadelphia party organization into...well, breathing would be a good start. The focus of displeasure is Michael Meehan, the local GOP boss and successor to his father, Billy Meehan, who got the job of boss from his father, Austin Meehan. Warner reports that state party leaders tried to get local party chair Vito Canuso to step aside to make way for Al Schmidt, who was the Republican candidate for controller this year. Meehan resisted. Meanwhile, Schmidt is talking about running a slate to fill vacant committeeman positions. It shouldn't be hard to win them. About 60 percent of the committee slots are unfilled.
