It's a
brief item in the Daily News, but big news for Philadelphia. The city's population is growing. The Census Bureau, in its latest estimate, put the city's population at 1,547,297 as of July, 2009. That is about 7,000 higher than the 2008 estimate. The estimate is based upon demographic sampling of births, deaths, immigrant arrivals and departures, so it is not the official count. That is underway now with the 2010 Census, which will offer a more detailed look at population trends. If it holds, though, it will mean that the city has grown for the first time in 60 years -- since 1950, when population topped out at two million.
