Building modular homes may be an answer to Philadelphia's high construction costs. As Alan Heavens
reports in today's (March 29) Inquirer, using modular construction, where the house is build in pieces in a factory, can save anywhere from $12 to $32 a square foot on construction costs. The high costs of building a home in the city hamper growth. It costs $128 a square foot to build a house in the Philadelphia, while sale prices average only $100 a square foot. Construction costs are $35 a square foot less in the Pennsylvania suburbs. The reason is: Philly is a union town, while the burbs uses mostly non-union labor.
