Gambling Pays

Gov. Rendell, the father of casino gambling in Pennsylvania, is proud of his love child.  Rendell told reporters Thursday (April 15) that casinos brought in $770 million in revenue to the state this year -- most of which was funneled into property tax breaks for homeowners or, in Philadelphia, to reducing the city's wage tax. So much for the good news.  The bad news is that the state may have to repay $800 million it took out of a special MCare fund, which was created to help pay large medical malpractice settlements.  Commonwealth Court ruled in Thursday that the state did not have the right to raid the fund to balance the state budget and should give the $800 million back to MCare.  Rendell said the state would appeal the ruling.
