There was
good news about the economy in the headlines today (April 3), with the nation's payrolls expanding by 162,000 jobs in March and the national unemployment rate at 9.7 percent. But, we're still waiting for a dose of good news in Philadelphia. As of January, the
unemployment rate in the city was 11.4 percent, up from 10.6 percent in December. Preliminary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that unemployment stayed above 11 percent in February. Meanwhile, the numbers of jobs in the city continues to decline. The total stood at 651,000 jobs at the end of last year, down 11,500 from 12 months before.
