Bad Idea of the Month

The Navy is considering sinking the Olympia and making it part of a artificial reef in the Atlantic 30 miles off the coast of New Jersey.  The warship, which Admiral Dewey captained during the Spanish-American War has been a fixture on Philadelphia waterfront for more than 50 years. But, it's hull is deteriorating, it apparently would cost up to $20 million for repair and restore, so the Independence Seaport Museum and the Navy have made inquiries about sinking it, so deep sea divers could explore it. Apparently, it would be cheaper to sink the ship than scrap it, which is the other option being considered. Metropolis recently highlighted the Olympia and its plight in a special report on preserving the past.
